2018-11-18 22:10:23 +0200 marked best answer text always pastes as 12 pt into 11 pt style

I've followed the suggestions (thank you) for pasting and cut my text from NoteTab Light (Pasteboard.txt = "Courier New 10") which eliminates all of the (extra).

Across many Writer versions and years:

My "Options - LibreOffice - Basic Fonts (Western)" Font: Default: "Times New Roman 11."

My "Default Style" is set to "Times New Roman 11." My "Text Body" style is set to "Times New Roman 11."

When I paste into either of those styles, the size _always_ = "Times New Roman 12."

Why, please?

And how can I fix this so I don't have to _always_ change the font size?

Thank you.

2017-12-07 09:38:58 +0200 marked best answer why has my use of 1st been automatically changed to 1*

I have recently upgraded to 4.4.1.2. In Writer, I now discover that my previously frequent use of "1st" now automatically changes to "1" plus "st" in superscript, which is illegible. I use super- and sub-scripts, but this use is not to my preference.

1> Why, typographically/grammatically? I can imagine this is not preferred, but I'm only writing a draft. 2> How can I change this apparent "default"?

Also, spell check options, etc, do no appear to be accessible from the "Options" dialog. Is there a specific reason for this? How are we supposed to think about where our various option controls are to be found?

2017-01-09 01:45:47 +0200 asked a question Calc basics: formatting or styles?

Three decades and much software and languages later, I am finally forced to learn spreadsheets. However, my intuitive sense that designing a spreadsheet around the necessary columns and their respective data types seems to be missing from the many resources I have started with over many hours.

I need to design a bookkeeping spreadsheet/template for expenses, to start with.

It seems to me that I first need to set the titles for the columns in row A, and then somehow set the specific data types for the columns, such as "date," and "$(amount)".

Is the "Format Cells" dialog the best/correct way to begin to design a sheet/template?

Or is there some other approach using styles?

Also, if another question is appropriate, are there some online resources for LO Calc templates?

2016-02-24 11:33:01 +0200 marked best answer Navigator in Writer shows frame text and body text as bookmarks

LO v4.2.4.2, Win7 x64/sp1+

I'm learning the hard way about setting up my paragraph and text body styles at the start of a new project, and paying attention to that: I've been living in the land of unconscious Styles and now my bad dreams are showing up...

I can't explain any of the more than 4 thousand unconscious inappropriate changes I've made, but I have this 200 page doc with many images, with more pages to add and I've discovered that when I Export to pdf with bookmarks, the first twenty or so contain the text from text frames, and then the Heading 1 shows, and the H2 and H3 that I'm using-that's all for the headings.

In addition to all of the junk text frame heading/bookmarks that appear in Navigator before H1, my last H2 with H3's has practically every line of Text Body as a separate book mark.

I have Text Body set and Default Style that mirrors those settings.

I went through all of the pages line by line practically and found some unwanted higher number H styles set on blank lines and I removed those.

I can have the Navigator show only the levels I want, and I've demoted all of the junk (non)heading/bookmarks but Export to pdf still adds all of the rest.

Are there any other tricks I can apply to clean this doc up and get my Export to pdf bookmarks cleaned up?

2015-10-06 10:04:05 +0200 answered a question Extra line spacing in first line of text paragraph

I've temporarily forgotten the specific document it was I was working on.

The problem, in that case, with pasting as plain text is that I lose much of the work of formatting, given that the original text (html) had super- and subscripts, which are/were essential to the meaning of the content.

I suppose that by remembering to use the character formatting tools, I could reformat the plain text as intended into the requisite algebra...

Thanks for all of your comments, all of which I tried, AFAIK, and since we're up to 5.0.0.5, that is good news for me: 5.0.0.1 took about a half an hour to save a simple text change--on my system, at least-- so I'm still back at 4.4.1.2, for now.

2015-10-03 23:06:49 +0200 asked a question Extra line spacing in first line of text paragraph

Sometimes--and sometimes "often"--when I paste text from another source such as a web page, the first line of text in the paragraph has about 1/2 extra line space between that first line and the second line.

When I examine the default and text body styles, I cannot find a way to remove that 1/2 extra line space between that first line and the second line. It does not seem to correspond to any of the paragraph style settings.

1) Any idea what causes this, what might be embedded in the html text I am pasting as text?

2) How can I remove that 1/2 extra line space?

2015-05-24 21:08:19 +0200 commented answer Manual column break label

Thanks for considering: I tried following your offer, and unfortunately it did not seem to have an effect or relation that I can discern to this "feature."

2015-05-23 08:22:36 +0200 answered a question Manual column break label

Important features may need redundancy--and I can't think of any that exist, right now--but such a simple need for a column break doesn't need the over kill of both the "non-printing border at the top of the new column" AND a text label indicating the same.

That kind of feature should be auxiliary, perhaps when more than one person is managing the document.

However, why do I need even one reminder, when I'm formatting the doc. I don't recall when this redundant annoyance was added, distracting me, adding to all of the additional distractions:

I bought Scrivener, but have stayed with LO. Does this evolutionary direction mean that I will have to manage more distractions from my writing and concentration? Is that the implicit message: LO is only for "offices," writers look elsewhere?
