2015-02-28 21:36:01 +0200 asked a question Writer Freezes - suspect hardpage returns, corrupted code

I have a three hundred thousand word document I have been working on for several years (a work in progress).

System is fresh install Fedora 21/64 (just upgraded from Fedora 20/64 - problem was occurring on Fedora 20 as well) 8 gig of ram, 2 x SSD's.

When I try to work on it it freezes. Freezing the entire computer system (Fedora 21/64, 8 gig ram 2xSSD's etc.) I don't believe it is insufficient resources.

I believe it is corrupted code as the document also has trouble opening in Calligra Word and Abiword. Other documents open just fine. In fact, other Libre word documents seem to open okay.

The document has ended up with manual hard page returns that I am unable to delete. I have tried the 'selecting the paragraph with/after/before the hard page return, Format - Paragraph - Breaks, tick/untick box. But to no avail. The hard page breaks persist.

I have tried: Format - Clear Direct formatting, and it dropped the document size from 870kb down to 655kb, and sort of seemed to help, but freezes and soffice.bin 100% cpu max still occur with LibreOffice becoming unusable.

I'm at wits end here but think the freezes and very poor performance are occurring due to the hard page returns that have some how inadvertently been inserted. I want to get rid of them. But CANT! I am thinking I must go into the code / raw xml to delete them somehow.

Please help. I have spent days trying to fix this, and re-installed my entire operating system.

I am having a similar problem and have just posted about it.

My system freezes (mouse is responsive but nothing happens, and CPU has one core maxed out whilst office.bin (whatever it is) goes nuts. I usually have to do a full restart.

Sometimes LO Writer calms down and I can continue working.

I'm using Fedora 20, and my wife uses Ubuntu and is also experiencing the same problem. I'm unable to downgrade to the previous package as it seems to have been 'removed?'..

Just FYI

Hi all.

Using LO Writer version on Fedora 20/64.

When using Writer (a large document almost 300,000 words) LO Writer freezes and the entire system. Mouse works but keyboard doesn't; 4 core AMD CPU runs at 25% (one core maxed out on LibreOffice.bin (whatever it is) and the only way to recover is full restart.

I use Fedora 20. My wife uses Ubuntu (latest version) and we are both experiencing the same problem on different systems with different configurations. We have not experienced this problem till the 'upgrade.'

I've tried to downgrade to the previous version that worked but am unable to do so - come up with:

Error: Package: 1:libreoffice-core- (fedora) Requires: Available: libcmis-0.3.1-8.fc20.x86_64 (fedora) Installed: libcmis-0.4.1-5.fc20.x86_64 (@updates) Error: Package: 1:libreoffice-langpack-en- (updates) Requires: libreoffice-core = 1: Removing: 1:libreoffice-core- (@updates) libreoffice-core = 1: Downgraded By: 1:libreoffice-core- (fedora) libreoffice-core = 1: You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

I don't know what the above out means by the way, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to software (I'm a writer not a coder) :)

I am stumped, and our work has ground to a halt trying to figure this out. It happens intermittently but may happen 3 or 4 times before running again (restart required each time).

Sorry if this isn't much info to go on. Really appreciate any tips people may have to try and fix this - even if it is just to downgrade to the previous version.

Thank you.
