Thanks. Well I've decided to keep time machine on all the time which backs up incremental changes every hour.

Unfortunately that wasn't an option. Fortunately I had another version of the sheet on googledocs except that it's missing three columns of personal data that I'll have to re-enter. Yeah, but from now on I'm going to back it up in several places.

I had a spreadsheet open that I'd been working on and took a break to look at something else while still at my desk. When I returned to the sheet it was blank. I had over 6,500 rows and seven columns. My cat did walk over part of my keyboard but I don't see how that could've cleared the entire sheet and besides another application was on top when she did it. There are two other sheets in the file but they are fine. I had it mirrored with bitcasa but they presently don't have a previous version feature. The last time I ran time machine was six months ago so I've lost over 1,000 rows of entries and lots of editing. Is there any way to recover earlier versions of the file? I didn't have the back up copy feature enabled in calc.

I discovered the dates that weren't sorting properly had an apostrophe before them that was only visible in the input line. Once I removed that from the cells they sorted properly.

In spreadsheet I have a column of dates near the end of rows of other data. I have formatted them all the same but when I try to sort all data by the dates in that column there's a group of dates that are not integrated properly in the results. Any suggestions?

Update: I've discovered that when I click on a cell that is properly sorted I see "Sum = 12/25/2012" at the bottom of the spreadsheet. When I click on a cell that hasn't been sorted properly I see "Sum =0".

When I add a hyperlink to text in a spreadsheet it adds a grey background color around the text. Is there a way to eliminate or customize this?
