Yes, but normally, this information is stored in the disk's catalog not in the file's data fork. So if it is present in the file data fork, this probably means that some utility/compressor has merged/saved the file information, the data fork (and probably the rsrc fork) in a new data fork, ...

2016-01-20 09:35:04 +0200 answered a question Is there a way to open my old Appleworks data files on a new Mac 10.10?

Hello, if this file was a AppleWorks' database, none version of iWorks will accept to open it:-~ But normally, LibreOffice will try to open it in spreadsheet: one record by row and one field by column, it is far from perfect but it tries to retrieve the main data.

Notes:

  • if the current version of LibreOffice 5.0 does not open this file, you may have more luck with the pre-release version http://www.libreoffice.org/download/l... (which corrects at least one problem which can cause some files to be unreadable with previous versions)

2016-01-11 10:31:19 +0200 answered a question AppleWorks Dokumente laden

Hello, I answer in english (because I never studied german).

Your pictures may contain some 8200 or 8201 opcodes ; unfortunately the Apple Pict filter of LibreOffice does not understand these opcodes, so it ignores their contents.

I just try to save a similar picture with LibreOffice 5.1 and it strips the unknown 8200 opcode part's, so I do not think that this can work. The only solution that I found(a) is to unzip the .odt results in a empty repository(b) and then to look for a Pictures repository which must contain the original pictures, pictures which can be opened on OSX with Preview and/or converted with ImageMagic.

(a) ok, it is also possible to compile a debug version of libmwaw which will extract all the pictures in a separate place,

(b) a .odt file is a zip file, so you can change its extension in .zip and ask the finder to unzip the file ( or you can directly call unzip in a Terminal windows)

--- a google translation, feel free to improve it :-~

2015-08-17 09:12:33 +0200 answered a question I have opened and edited an appleworks file by dragging it to the LO window with "Open File" selected. Now, how do I exit, or close, the window without closing the whole LO app? I see no "button" to do so. I have an iMac, OS10.10. Thanks.

Hello, when you have opened the AppleWorks's file, this file has been converted(1). To close a window, you can either click on red icon in the windows bar (top left) or choose Close in the File menu(2) ; in both case, if you have done some edition it will ask you if you want to save the file, cancel or discard your changes...

(1) therefore, if you want to keep your change, you must save it as a new file. (2) if you are in fullscreen mode, you must type "escape" to go back in normal mode

2014-12-03 12:32:19 +0200 answered a question How can I convert a MS Works (.wdb) database to a LibreOffice (.odb) database on a computer running Elementary OS Luna?

Hello, the best solution is probably to use Microsoft Works to export the database to a more common format: probably dBase ( to be checked ).

If you do not have access to Microsoft Works, you can try to open it with LibreOffice 4.3 ( see http://www.unixmen.com/install-libreo... ): normally a small filter have been added which tries to import the data in Calc, then if this works, you will have to recreate a database with these data.

2014-10-24 10:54:58 +0200 commented answer Can Libre Office open old MS Works wdb files?

Just for note, now LibreOffice 4.3 also tries to open wdb files in Calc, ie. it tries to retrieve the main database in a wdb file and to create a spreadsheet (each row representing a record and each column a field) but it does not try to retrieve any forms, reports, filters, sort functions, ... (so I am not sure that this is what Brian searches).

Ami Pro seems only to exist on Windows, OS/2, HP-UX ( see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ami_Pro ) ; if so, this format will never be supported by libmwaw :-~

2014-08-19 09:20:01 +0200 answered a question Libmwaw glitch?

Hello, as you find libmwaw-0.3.3 in the LibreOffice's repository, this means that you use LibreOffice 4.3.

Even if the message does not seem directly related to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug... (*), are you using LibreOffice 4.3.0 on OSX ? If so, you must either download LibreOffice 4.3.1 ( release candidate, ...) or an older version of LibreOffice 4.2.

If this does not work and if some files are not confidential, it may be useful to see a problematic file...

(*) normally, the default filter must be called and the document must be opened with gibberish characters...

Note:

  • the naming of libmwaw-0.3.3 is confusing, it only means that LibreOffice is compiled with libmwaw-0.3.*. In fact, LibreOffice 4.3 is compiled with libmwaw-0.3.1 (which was the latest version of libmwaw when the sources of LibreOffice 4.3 were frozen).

2014-07-14 16:54:37 +0200 edited answer Can LO open Clarisworks / Appleworks documents (text, spreadsheet, and drawing)?

The MWAW filter ( see http://sourceforge.net/p/libmwaw/wiki/Home/ ) is indeed limited to convert text (word processing) documents.

Note: I am not sure that I choose the right word when I write "basic" in that comment ; more precisely, the CWK's filter must be able to retrieve :

  • the text, most graphics, the tables, the text-boxes, basic layouts...
  • but not the complex layouts, ... which can appear even in a text (word processing ) file.

Some updates:

  • in LibreOffice 4.2, a new version of libmwaw was integrated which also allows to convert some drawing and painting document with various accuracy...
  • in LibreOffice 4.3, basic spreadsheet and database will also be converted. More precisely, LibreOffice will try to import the main database/spreadsheet contents (ie. text,number,date/time,formula which appear in cells and the cells' formatting) in Calc but none embedded frame, chart, pictures, text boxes...
2014-07-13 08:56:57 +0200 commented answer Can this program convert my Microsoft Works .wps documents into Microsoft Office for Mac?

Normally, the support for Windows wps has been greatly improved in the latest versions of LibreOffice, so it must now be a lot much better than one year ago. In LibreOffice 4.3, some small support for wdb/wks Microsoft Works v1-v4.5 Windows will be also added...

Concerning the Mac wps files, LibreOffice must do a good job for v1-v2 files ; for the other formats/versions, you must try (i.e. I have only few files to test, so some problem can remain :-~ ).
