How do I change the formatting of Cross-References?

I am about to create a textbook that heavily relies on cross-references. For the reader it’s important that there’s some visual cue that allows him to easily identify and distinguish clickable phrases from non interactive elements. So I created a character style for cross-references that’s formatted in a similar fashion like hyperlinks.

Right now I have to manually go through each and every cross-reference and apply the style. What’s even worse is that the navigator doesn’t offer any way of jumping directly to cross-references. So I am left with the Fields… dialog that doesn’t let me mark down the cross-references without closing its window first.

Is there some way I can automatically apply a character style to all cross-references in a document?

And, on a related note, can I customize the cross-reference field text? Say I wanted Writer to insert see p. 8 instead of 8 when I choose Insert reference to --> page from the cross-reference dialog. Is there some way I could achieve this? Perhaps by manually editing a configuration file?

Thank you very much in advance. Any answer would be of tremendous help. I have been a long time participant on askubuntu.com and only recently found out about this platform. Very glad that it exists!

Ok, I found a solution. This extension can add cross-references and automatically apply customized characters styles to them. Too bad that there’s no official implementation of this. I might file a bugreport when I have more time. If so, I’ll link it here for your convenience.

Is this extension compatible with LibreOffice 4.x?
