Setting chart values

I have two columns of figures, Thickness and Time, as the first row of each. (cooking times BTW)

In each column I enter a series of numbers, with the thickness in the column 1 and required time in column 2.

I then select both columns and Insert Chart, and just as I expect it pops up and a Column type chart. But then as distinct from what I expect and what Youtube showed me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YskcMMEfxZs), instead of getting a chart of Time vs Thickness, I get 2 series, one for the times and one for the thickness. Both series lines are straight lines and I know this is not true.

The Thickness numbers are there, so the Y axis is 20 30 40 50 60 70. But the x axis is the numbers 1 to 6, which is simply a count of the number of rows.

I am very confused. Any help appreciated.

Two things might need attention. For the type of chart, be sure to select XY-Scatter. Also be sure to check mark the entry for “first column as label” (you might need to reverse the order of your two columns of data so that your time values come first). An “XY” chart is literally that – your first column of data should be the X values.
