Why do captions not work when they are small caps?

Why is it that if you insert a caption on an image in Writer, and then set the Caption style to use the Small Caps font effect, the word “Illustration” or whatever in your caption (i.e “Illustration 1: test”), disappears behind the image? I know that it can be fixed by setting the image to be anchored to paragraph, but this is not acceptable. I am designing a template for use throughout my organization. Captions are supposed to use a small caps style. By default when you add a caption, it wraps the image in a frame and sets the image to anchor “as character”. I don’t want to have to tell everyone who uses the template that they then need to set it to anchor as paragraph.

I spent over an hour getting to the root of this problem. Who on earth would have imagined that the problem was that the caption style was small caps? It gets even weird though, because if you can manage to select the whole caption, despite the image being in the way, and then do Clear Direct Formatting, the whole caption appears! What “direct formatting” is being applied to the caption that makes it have issues with the small caps style?

You can actually see the same problem if you select everything in the frame — the caption and the image — and then apply direct small caps formatting to the caption. But if you only select the caption and apply the direct formatting, then the caption is fine. Very strange.

For the time being I am using full caps style and a smaller font size for the captions, but I would rather use small caps.

Hmm… Actually I’d think that it may be worked around by ensuring that image (inside the frame) is followed by a new paragraph with the caption (which is not the case by default: the “add caption” function adds the caption as a continuation of the same paragraph which is started with the image anchored as character) - but that is another manual work…

Anyway - if what you see is the case (didn’t test myself), then it’s likely a bug which should be filed.

Seems to be a bug. I did a test of this and and had the same results, using LO v 6.1.3.2, OpenSUSE 15. Did extra testing with justification, same result, and then made the image transparent to see if the word “Figure” was hidden behind the image. It isn’t, it is gone! This looks like a bug. :frowning:

Oh wow. I assumed it was hiding behind, because if I delete the image the category label is there. Thanks for your further testing. Seems like a very small obscure bug, but maybe the same bug causes other problems too. I guess I will try to report it.

This was confirmed as a bug and fixed in 6.4 I think.
