I find LO 4.4.6 very usable, but LO 5.1.5 almost unusable due to delays/lags in screen updating, range selection with mouse, etc. It leads to mistakes, deleting wrong things, etc., due to poor synchronization of screen with my mouse/keyboard input. And too many spinning balls. This on El Capitan.

So I think whatever happened probably happened with the move from LO 4 to LO 5. I cannot stay with LO 5 unless it can be fixed, it's too easy to end up deleting the wrong things.

I have just successfully installed LibreOffice 5.1.4 on OSX El Capitan 10.11.5, with no sign of these verification problems. I don't know whether that's a result of a change in LO or OSX.

Try this: Right Click|Get Info.

Half way down the Inspector panel is an "Open with:" section. It should show as "DiskImageMounter (default)".

If it doesn't, select DiskImageMounter in the drop down chooser, and click on "Use this application to open all documents like this one."

In LO the "English, OED spelling" option is not listed in the Language drop-down under "Tools|Spelling & Grammar". I see you are using LO, so perhaps matters have changed. Or perhaps you are referring to a different dictionary drop-down menu.

Nevertheless, in LO it is possible to set the Language of a text selection to "English, OED spelling" under "Tools|Language". But, as I remarked, that is useless because the dictionary is not recognized.

Not a solution, but a confirmation of your finding. The dictionary en-GB-oed is not recognized by LibreOffice (

I believe that there are some 'hacks' which involve replacing the existing UK dictionary with the OED version, but I don't find that approach satisfactory. I need access to both variants.

'Under the hood' there does seem to be some support for language variants, i.e. en-GB-oed as opposed to en-GB, but as there seems to be no way of having LibreOffice recognize the en-GB-oed dictionary, that support is useless.

For this reason, as a Mac user, I am transitioning to Apple's 'Pages' app. If you are also a Mac user, then it is worth knowing that if you copy the relevant files [1] into ~/Library/Spelling, the OED dictionary becomes available in the Mac's system spell checker.

And I remark that although LibreOffice seems to support the Mac's spell checker, it still doesn't see the en-GB-oed dictionary !

This behaviour appears to have been fixed in LibO V4.2.3.3 (released April 2014). It was present in LibO V4.2.1.1.

I can't see which source code change dealt with it.

Thanks, that found it for me. I can normally find these things pretty quickly, but this one beat me. Perhaps the web designers could make the links a bit more explicit, i.e. prominent links to language packs and help packs next to the big download link.
