I’ve just updated LibreOffice to the latest version 5.4.2 and now it seems to working slower and also the font looks kinda different, like thinner or something. Before the update, I had been using version 5.2.7 IIRC.

You did not provide much information so a definitive answer is hard to provide.
I am using a Mac so this answer is based on my experience.
The rendering engine has been changed and is performing very poorly. This causes fonts to appear incorrectly on the screen.
Also, for an unknown reason performance has also taken a hit.
In my opinion your best option is to return to the 5.2.7 release and wait for the issues to be corrected.
That is what I have done. None of the current releases work for me.
Post again and maybe someone can provide a more detailed response.
