Does LibreOffice snoop on users' documents? really?

Hello community. I’m a huge fan of LibreOffice.

Today I recommended my friend Chris to install LibreOffice, but surprisingly he instead told me to uninstall LibreOffice, he told me that Libreoffice is not good for privacy, it snoops on users’ documents, and sends these documents (and keystrokes, in short anything that we type) to their servers where employees or creators can see your documents, he said that LibreOffice collects huge amount of telemetry, that’s why he don’t like it. He even said that he has seen great number of outbound requests being made, where data was uploaded to some unknown servers! When I told him that I don’t believe him, he said he is one of the best programmars and knows his stuff! He said he is very experienced!

So dear users, what’s going on here? what’s the truth? I’m not a programmer and I don’t know the tech stuff.

Look through the source code yourself. It’s free to download and compile your own LO.

Never heard such a funny story. I sit near my router and I don’t see any activity while using LO.

Bobby Fisher was a great chess player, but also completely paranoid. So is your friend. Or, maybe he downloaded a hacked version with loads of inbuilt spyware.

Security depends on many things, and almost anything is possible but not probable. Statistically, security is dependent on two things: how relatively valuable what you have is to what others have, and how your security wall compares with others. In other words, should the attacker waste their time on you, or are their bigger pots of gold with less trouble to get? If what you have is very valuable, then you need much better security. Is LO very secure? No. Is it somewhat secure? Possibly.

Unfortunately no. Of course, the LibreOffice developer community would be glad to seize control over the world, and become masterminds of humanity. But in reality, even the crash reporting feature (that only sends information if used decides so explicitly in special dialog) lacks some crucial pieces of information required to deeply understand many problems (e.g., even locale information that is often essential when problems with e.g. spell checking or RTL arise), because TDF is very much concerned about users’ privacy.

The source code is open. Aside of TDF-provided packages, there are a number of third-party distributions (e.g. from different OS package management systems), and anyone may build LO themselves (like is still common on e.g. FreeBSD).
