Yanni, you need to install a complete JDK, a JRE by itself is no longer recognized. Additionally, for JDK versions greater than 1.8.0_99 (e.g. 101, 102) , you will need LibreOffice 5.2.1 or 5.1.6. You may also need to tell LibreOffice where to find the installed JDK once you have installed it, by pointing to it specifically under LibreOffice > Preferences > Advanced.

I might add that using the default embedded hsqldb as the database engine for such a db is probably not the greatest of ideas, depending on whether or not you are going to include sequence data in one of the fields. You would be better off using a "split" hsql database (see other posts on splitting hsql out for how to do that) or else a server backend db engine such as MariaDB/MySQL or Postgresql.

Gary, Make sure you are using the same bit-type JRE as the bit-type of your LibreOffice application. If you are using a 32bit LibreOffice application, then you need a 32bit JRE. If you are using a 64bit LibreOffice application, which I am assuming you are, you need a 64bit JRE. You can not mix and match between bit versions.

You need to install a complete JDK. A JRE on its own is no longer detected in recent versions of LibreOffice and current versions of OSX.
