I have a spreadsheet that contains 10 colums and 2500 rows. All of the cells contain quite complicated formulas.

I wanted to increase the amount of rows to 5000, however ... all of a sudden everything becomes very slow. While at first it took only 1 or 2 seconds to save the file, it now takes over 7 minutes!!

Is this "normal" behavior caused by too many cells with formulas, or should I perhaps change one of the (memory) settings or something?

Who can tell me what to do? Or should I just decrease the amount of rows?

In LO Version 5.3.1.2 I do this:

1) I create a new Calc file

2) The cursor is in cell A1

3) I protect the tab:

  • I don't enter a password
  • I deselect "Select protected cells"
  • I keep "Select unprotected cells" selected

Since all cells have a "Default" style, and the default style is set to "protected" it should now be impossible to select any cell at all.

Let's test ... I click TAB ... nothing happens. So far so good.

I click ENTER ... nothing happens. Nice work!

I click CURSOR RIGHT ARROW ... cell B1 is selected ... whaaaaat??! :-s

Using the arrow keys I can select many more cells ... not all of them, but many!

I am able to click some cells with the mouse as well! This seems like a major bug.

Is this only happening to me, or to other people as well? Could someone please test and comfirm?

Hello,

I have a Calc file that uses Iterations. Iterations must be enabled for the file to function properly.

When I open this file on another computer that has LibreOffice installed, will Iterations automatically be enabled? In other words, will this setting (Iterations enabled) be stored in the Calc file?

This site all of a sudden redirects to the website's version of my country's language. In this version I don't see any questions/posts (because there aren't any).

I don't want that!!!

I Always want to see the English (default) version.

Please developers can you fix this. This is unwanted behaviour.

Thanks for your replies. I'll just have to get used to typing the correct URL (with language) then.

I would however appreciate a "language selector" to easily skip to another language as user RGB-es suggested.

Can someone form the developers team tell me if the new font-rendering engine will be improved?

In Calc I use the standard Liberation Sans font at 9 pixels, and some letters are really squeezed together. This happened after updating to version 5.3. As I understand a new font-rendering engine has been implemented in version 5.3, but can we expect some improvements on the future versions? This letter-squeezing is not good :-(

Have a look at the image and especially the word 'Amsterdam'.

As you can see in the image there is a lot of space between the first A and m.

But then the letters ste are totally squeezed together.

Will this be improved in a future version of LO?

Allright guys. I'm getting the hang of Calc :) It's doing some nice things for me. But this time I've got a real difficult question ... I think.

So here's the scenario. I created a spreadsheet. The first 5000 rows contain formulas to help me fill in the data. Each event I want to register, contains 1 row. So for example, when there are 10 events, it will take exactly 10 rows to register them. This means after 10 events, there will still be 4990 empty rows containing only formulas.

Now I do have 2 problems:

1) When I export my spreadsheet to a PDF, the empty 4990 rows will also be exported. This is useless.

2) Each row fits perfectly on my screen, but is too big (even in landscape mode) to fit on a single page. This means that each row will be printed over multiple pages.

Now to prevent these 2 problems, I wonder if it is possible to manually select the first 10 (non-empty) rows. Then run a macro that A) "shrinks" (the width of) the content in the selection so it fits on a single page and B) export the resized selection (without the 4990 empty rows) to a PDF file.

Probably I'm asking something that is totally impossible, but I've seen strange things happen on this forum, so who knows :-) Anyone got a solution maybe? Is what I want possible (or is there maybe a betters/easier way)?

Hi there,

I created a spreadsheet and now it's finished, so I don't need to edit it anymore. I was wondering if it is a good idea to customize the standard toolbar by hiding a lot of the buttons so only the buttons I really need (save, save as, export to pdf) remain in view and all of the other buttons will be hidden. I want to save this adjustment in the spreadsheet file itself, so when I open this file, I only get to see the relevant buttons.

I think the idea is good, but I wonder if it will cause me problems in the future, for example when the developers decide to delete or change any of the buttons, or maybe add new ones. Will this cause (technical) problems then? What do you think?

Does LibreOffice (and especially Calc) act exactly the same way on all operating systems?

For example, when I create a spreadsheet in Calc in a Windows version of LibreOffice, will this spreadsheet function properly and in the exact same way in for example an iOS or Linux based version of LibreOffice?

Can someone tell me what the default settings for "Iterations" are in Calc?

To what amount should I set "Steps" and "Minimum change"?

I would also like to know what "steps" means. For example if I set "steps" to 10, will each cell be evaluated 10 times??? What is the exact use? And does it make a difference if I set steps to (for example) 5 or 5.000? For example does it increase or decrease performance?

I hope someone can explain how this works. Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

I noticed my spreadsheet runs very slow.

I was able to detect the problem and it seems to be caused by a data validity setting.

I will try to explain the situation. I have 2 sheets, let's call them X and Y.

Sheet Y contains "Categories" in the first row, and "Options" in the columns (starting at row 2).

For example:

   A         B
1 color     size
2 red       small
3 green     medium

In the example, color and size are categories and red, green, small and medium are the options.

I created a named range "Categories" for the categories, and a named range "Options" for the options.

Now in sheet X column A, I use the data validity option and I set the range to "Categories" so I can pick a category. This works fine. In the next column in sheet X (column B) I also use the data validity option. Once you have picked a category in column A, you can pick one of its corresponding options in column B. In the data validity section I set this formula as the range:

INDEX(Options;0;MATCH(A1;Categories;0)) // this is the data validity formula for cell B1

This data validity formula is copied to the first 5000 rows (sheet X, column B), and incredibly slows down everything. Saving the document takes about 15 seconds. If I remove the data validity option, it only takes 2 seconds.

Is there a way I can replace this formula with another one that does exactly the same thing?

Hello,

I noticed a new version (4.4.2, Fresh branch) came out a couple of days ago.

Being quite new to LibreOffice, I wonder what is the correct way to install this new version. Do I need to uninstall the previous version first? Or is that not necessary? And will my current settings not be destroyed?

Any advice would be welcome.

I'm not sure if what I want is possible, but maybe anyone of you can tell me if it is.

Lets say in Calc we create 2 tabs. In the second tab I would like to create "categories" with options, for example:

     A      B   
1  color   size
2  red     small
3  blue    medium
4  green   large

The first row acts as a "category", in this case "color" and "size" and the underlaying cells are the options for that specific category. Now what I would like to do, is on the first tab being able to select a category. Once I picked a category, in the next cell I would like to choose one of the options, so you get something like this:

     A           B   
1  CATEGORY   OPTION
2  color      blue
3  size       small

Can this be done?

I am using the latest version of LO and noticed some very strange (and dangerous) behavior.

In some occasions (I didn't try them all of course) pressing the "close" button of a pop-up box, has the same result as clicking the "OK" button.

For example, I wanted to delete a template. By mistake I selected the wrong template, so I closed the pop-up box (by pressing the little cross). Instead of aborting the operation (normal behavior) my template got deleted (as if I had pressed the "OK" button). So gone was my template. I tried to repeat this behavior and the exact same thing happened.

Another example. Create a new style. Now modify this style by changing the background color to, for example, red. Do NOT click the "OK" button, but instead click the "close" button (the little cross). Now try modifying your style again ... surprise surprise, you will notice that your background color has been saved, while you didn't press the "OK" button.

This is a serious warning, because it can cause unexpected behavior. In my case I unintentionally threw away a template.

In this topic (unfortunately I can't respond to it anymore) I stated that a document assigned to a certain template didn't update after changing that template. I finally found out what is causing it. It seems to be a bug.

What happened is that I don't want meta data like "editing time" and "revision" to be visible to other people when they look at one of my document properties. In LibreOffice "Security" options, there is a section "Security Options and Warnings". By enabling the option "Remove personal information on saving" this meta data is not recorded. You can have hundreds of revisions of a document and spend hundreds of hours working on it. The meta dat will show revision number 1 and a total editing time of 00:00:00. Great, exactly how I want it. BUT ... enabling this setting is what causes the document not to update after its template has changed. Maybe (but not sure) this has something to do with not being able to compare the "last updated timestamp" from both the template and the document. So the document does not "see" that the template has changed. I am just guessing here.

Allright ... so in order to update my documents after changing a template, I must disable this specific security setting, but now my metadata is being recorded ... which I do not want to happen. Is there another way to disable tracking the revision number and editing time? Is there maybe an expert configuration setting I could adjust to disable this behavior? Any help or ideas/suggestions will be very much appreaciated. Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to create a dynamic drop down list in Calc?

I will try to explain what I mean. I want to create a spreadsheet and every cell in column A (except A1) should contain a drop down list which contains all of the values that have been previously entered in column A.

    A
 1 COLOR
 2 red
 3 red
 4 blue

As you see there are 2 different values in column A: red and blue. Imagine that at first the spreadsheet was empty. In cell A2 I then manually typed "red". The value "red" automatically became part of the drop down list. In cell A3 instead of typing I could now use the drop down list to select the value "red". In cell A4 I manually typed "blue". In cell A5 I could use the drop down list (which now contained "blue" and "red") to select the appropriate value.

Is it possible to create something like that? Preferably without any "shadow" tables?
