How can I add to the cell background palette in calc?

When formatting cells in calc, the background choices are very sparse. Worse, many are too dark to use without also changing the text color as well. There are many options for text colors, but far too few for the backgrounds. Is there any way to add to this palette? I just upgraded to 6.1.5; it seems to me that in past versions there was a greater range of choices.

When you select “format Cells”, then select “Background”, you will see a “button” under New called “Pick”. Here you can select an “unlimited” (so to speak) choice of colors to created. Once you selected one and click “OK” it will show up within the “New” box. Just click on “add”, give it a name and you will be able to use it as often as you want. Hope this has help.

Thank you for this, it is sort of what I expected. I think I have something not working right. When I posted, I had 2 and 1/2 rows, about 30 colors. Suddenly, I have 10 rows, 120 colors. But I have no “New”, or “Pick” anywhere to be seen. Under conditional formatting, I have it all, as well as under Font Effects. I may try a reinstall, I don’t think this is right. Thanks!

@_dave, the background color picker you describe is present in Writer in LO 6.1.5, but not in Calc (at least on Windows OS).

It was right in front of my face. In the toolbar, there is bold, italic, underline, font color, background color. The latter two have drop-down menus that give you an infinite selection. It is not in the right-click menu, which is what I have become accustomed to using. Under “Custom”, there is “Pick a color”, as you mentioned, you can build your own palette.
