2013-02-08 19:21:35 +0200 Perguntou Fomatting not saved; text disappearing

More problems with editing .doc files in LibreOffice.

  1. The journal requires all notes to be endnotes, not footnotes. To change footnotes to endnotes, I have gone to "Tool//Footnotes/Endnotes" and then selected "Footnotes" and "At end of document". This gets me exactly what I need: Endnotes with 1, 2, 3....formatting at the end of the document. Problem is, when I save the document (.docx) and send it; and then open it up again ON MY OWN COMPUTER, the notes are footnotes again, AND more than half the content is missing, even though the numbers are there.

  2. I compiled and wrote a complete Reference section by cutting and pasting from footnotes, and then editing. This was a two page Reference section, and it is not completely lost. All of my other editing marks/additions remains, including notes in text; but this is completely missing. I'm thinking it may be because it was copied from the footnotes, which are also largely missing? No idea.

No. But the document was opened in WordPad, saved and then opened again in LibreOffice with minor formatting errors. I fixed those errors and sent it off. Now I'm dealing with a new problem....see new post if interested.

2013-02-07 21:33:29 +0200 Pergunta comentada HELP: Bizarre formatting glitch in Text Document

Did this with no effect. To be clear: I selected several pages of text and selected "Default" from the dropdown box. That had no effect (did not consolidate). I then de-selected the text, went to Styles and Formatting/Page Styles; I then selected several pages of text and double-clicked "Default."

2013-02-07 09:41:05 +0200 Perguntou HELP: Bizarre formatting glitch in Text Document

I copy edit documents for a couple journals. I've edited dozens of articles so far in LibreOffice without a hitch. I typically save the documents in .docx format so others can open them.

On Tuesday I opened and began editing an article, and saved my progress without a problem. I finished the document today and sent it to my editor. He writes back and says he can't open the document, and could I save it in .doc format instead of .docx. I open the document to "save as" and the formatting is completely messed up. First off, what used to be a 25 page double-spaced article is now 147 pages; the title, author name, author info, and first section are ALL on different pages; when I try to delete or back space to bring a line of text back up to the same page, the line of text is brought up to the same line as the title -- IOW, there seems to be no ability to put two lines of text on one page.

I edited two other articles on the same computer, saving them the same way during the same stretch of time, with no problems.

I have no idea what is going on. I'm not real computer literate, but I'd like to avoid repeating the 4 or 5 hours of editing this article took.

The document was originally in .doc format.

The only thing I can think of is that at one point I noticed that the "drop down box" that typically has "Default" listed had "Free Form B" instead -- but this didn't have an effect while editing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

2012-11-08 07:14:25 +0200 Respondeu uma pergunta Header and Footer disappearing

David, Thanks for the help. I went back through the document and found that many of the headers and footers were "Converter 12" and "Converter 17" etc. I believe these titles refer to page styles. However, I changed all of these back to Default (by opening Styles and Formatting via F11) and the problem persists.

I opened the document on a Mac and inserted headers and page numbers there.

Would still like to know how to fix this in the future.

2012-11-07 21:17:01 +0200 Perguntou Header and Footer disappearing

I have a multiple page document that I've compiled from separate documents. I have added a header to the document. When I save it and close, and then reopen the document, the header is gone on the first 5 pages (the first chapter of the document). The rest of the document has the header (the remaining chapters). Also, the page numbers which were entered as a footer also disappear.

Somehow I selected "Converter 12" for the header setting, and I thought that was the problem. But I've changed it back to "Default" and the problem persists.

2012-08-07 05:50:59 +0200 Perguntou How can I search for text in endnotes?

I need to verify that authors listed in the References are actually cited in the text; and this needs to include the endnotes. However, when I use the Ctrl+F function, the endnotes are not included in the search. In Word I can select "text" or "text and endnotes" etc. How can I make sure the endnotes are included in my search of the document?

Thanks a bunch -- that is easy. I had been to that first "Styles and Formatting" window several times, but did not know how to use. Thanks again.

2012-06-11 04:10:08 +0200 Perguntou How to add a unique footer to first page

I'm copyediting some articles and I need to add a footer to only the first page of the documents. I've learned how to do this in Word but really prefer using LibreOffice. Any help would be appreciated.
