16:9 slides getting printed in 4:3 format as handouts

I was sent a .pptx presentation. The slides were in “widescreen” format. When I tried to print them 6-to-a-page on A4 paper, it defaults to portrait mode. When I change it to landscape mode, it appears to print them as 4:3 format (when I print a box around the slides, there is a large gap between the bottom of the slide and the bounding box, and the right edges of the slides are truncated.

I have tried changing the aspect ratio of the master slides from widescreen to 16:9 and 16:10 and it doesn’t appear to make any different.

Would anybody have any idea what is going on? When I view the slides in normal mode, they are obviously not in 4:3 format. The problem only arises when I try to print handouts. I have been trying unsuccessfully for hours to locate an answer

thanks in advance

You need to adapt the master of the handout. That is menu View > Master Handout. Select a placeholder for the slide. Then menu Format > Object and Shape > Position and Size. Now enter a size in section Size, which has a 16:9 ratio. Do that for all six placeholders.
