I want single page layout but seem to have only book layout.

Upgrade to 4.3.4 at http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ if you’re on Window$ or Mac, use https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa for Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based. 4.4.0 will be released soon, in a month or two, as RC1 was recently.

V 4.0 won’t still be in use much. 4.0 being the first release cycle contaning a lot of new code also concerning the old features might be expected to be a bit buggy. You might consider to upgrade. V4.3.4 (RC1) seems to work rather well and the next RC should be available tomorrow (2014-11-24) and will presumably also be the final 4.3.4.

The icons should show up in the status bar, right side, next to the zoom slide-control. Check if ‘Status Bar’ is ticked under ‘View’.
