I check “Adapt Table Width” box in the “Table Properties > Columns” dialog and click OK. I immediately reopen the Table Properties and find the box cleared.
I have the the table Alignment set to Left.
It is enabled only for that dialogue session so that you can adjust the column widths to your desired sizes and have the table adjust its width instead of adjusting the other column widths

I am not sure what you want to achieve. Here is a floating table that adjusts the table and column widths as you reduce or expand the frame width.
