Because the progress in LibreOffice development is continuous, the numbering scheme has changed from 4, 5, 6, 7 to 24.2, 24.8, 25.2, 25.8 indicating the year and month of the release.

Not such a leap as you might think. After 7.6 the version numbering was changed to reflect the year and month of the release. So 7.6 was followed by 24.2, 24.8 and 25.2; releases are six monthly, meaning 25.8 will be released soon.
Read the release notes for information on significant changes.
As always: Keep a backup of your user profile then you can restore it, if necessary. It doesn’t hurt to have an additional backup.
