Another Nasty Feature - Unable to Open ODF File From Folder

So here is yet another nasty feature of LO

  • Installed 3.6 two weeks ago
  • Used it several times…no problems…readily launch docs from file/folder directly
  • All of a sudden, file/folder explore locked up (100% CPU utilitization) and had to kill the folder to get out of it!!!
(note all the other file types launched with no problems…MS office, PDF, visio, etc).
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled 3.6
  • Now works again (dont know how long).

With all the issues LO has (stability issues, Draw not behaving as tutorials state, etc), this is really making LO pretty unusable for anything more than “how I spent my summer vacation”

LO community needs to delay the next release and get this suite to stable…pushing out a unstable buggy releases every few weeks (this is getting worse and worse…using <3.6 for 3 years now and never had this issue) is really undermining the value of this suite. As far as this rant goes, look at this forum, a good 1/3 of the posts talk about install / launch issues or wondering why old function and behaviors do not seem to work anymore.

There is a bugreport about this problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54249
Will hope that would be fixed in the next release

Update:

  • Bug report says work around is to back down to 3.5.6
  • So uninstalled 3.6 (only version on this system)
  • So assumed all options/settings lost…expect that
  • Installed 3.5.6 successfully
  • Guess what…all the settings were migrated (mm instead of inches, change behavior for text delete - separate mess, etc
  • Also, guess what, file associations were automatic…for 3.6, I had to manually set that last night after reinstall

Pretty interesting that preferences were maintained when NO version of LO present on the system.

Not a bad problem…first good surprises since 3.0…just seems odd ( realize some track to the document, but if a new document has none, where would it get that info). Glad file associations work as before.

Assuming no other issues…probably will stay on this until LO 5.1 since this suite is pretty out of control / unstable (new releases should NOT depricate basic functions like instal behavior, file opening, general advertised tool behavior, etc) and figure by then the LO community would be tired of fighting all these “simple/basic” problems and buckle down to get the suite stable let alone useful.

@vojo, all your settings are kept in your profile folder. Although this was nice in your particular situation, it is a bit sloppy for the uninstaller to leave data behind (there should be an option to remove this data during uninstall…)

@vojo, if you are willing to move back onto the 3.6.1.2 build – try a custom Windows installation with the LibO Windows Explorer extension NOT selected. There are several bugs with the Windows build and Windows shell integration – suspect 100% CPU to be further manifestation of fdo#52078, 53533.
