Apply Style with Single-click Instead of Double-click?

Is there a preference setting I can change so I can apply paragraph/character styles with a single click instead of a double click? My finger’s getting a hernia.

The settings for the mouse are usually made via the operating system.
For example, in my case (Windows) I can vary the double-click speed between slow and fast in several steps.
I am not aware of a one-click assignment of styles to text.
But you can assign different styles via the menu “Styles”.
Some of them can also be assigned with keyboard shortcuts.
You can also define keyboard shortcuts yourself via the menu Extras>Customise.
Or customise the menu.

I hope it helps you.

Here is a description of how to customise a context menu:

The application is analogous for menus and keyboard shortcuts.

I assume you double-click in the side stylepane. I’m afraid you can’t do this here because this pane is also the access point to customise the styles. Single-click is needed to select a style. Double-click makes a distinction between selection and application.

Another possibility is the paragraph style menu in the main toolbar (unless you chose some “ribbon” UI). This menu is auto-adaptative and records the used styles. After some typing you’ll find all your preferred styles. You need double-click a paragraph style only the first time or a few times before it is inserted into the menu.

Unfortunately there is nothing similar for character styles.

Usually, you work with less than 10 very frequent paragraph/character styles so that you can assign them to the numeric keypad (I do it with Ctrl for para styles and Alt for char styles).

Yes.

True, but it doesn’t need to. In other word processors, single-click in the side pane is both selection and assignment. I’m sure it could be done that way here, too. It actually makes things easier, too, because if a change in style happens as soon as the style is selected in the side-bar and changes are being made to the font style, the user gets more immediate visual feedback.

Also, there’s no reason for an entirely separate tab for managing and applying paragraph vs. character styles. A simple way for LO Writer to know which tool to use at any given time is this: if text is selected, apply the style only to the selected text. If no text is selected, apply the style change to the entire paragraph.

This is true, too. What I’m more focused on here is speed. Double-clicks slow things down when they’re performed over and over, dozens of times during an editing or writing session. Not to mention there’s less wear-n-tear on the wrists (carpel tunnel syndrome and all that).

Thanks for all the extra information.

You’re right.

Okay, thanks.

This is true, too, however it involves two separate mouse clicks and that slows things down even more.

I’ll check this out. Thanks.

You can single-click and hit Enter.

That would probably be faster than any other option. Thanks.
