Is there a way to insert ligatures, such as ‘fi’ and ‘fl’, automatically? I’m looking for a simpler method than inserting the ligature symbol manually.
This should occur automatically depending on the font properties. For example, I checked the behaviour difference between Liberation Serif and TeX Gyre Termes. The former does not even include the required instructions to perform the substitution (maybe the font does not contain the ligature glyphs) while the latter does.
If automatic replacement does not occur although the ligature glyph is present in the font, you can:
-
add custom replacement rules in
Tools
>AutoCorrect
>AutoCorrect Options
,Replace
tabReplacement occurs while typing as soon as the sequence is recognised.
-
or add an AutoText entry
After typing the AutoText name, you must press
F3
to cause the replacement to happen.

I tried your suggestion with Times New Roman font, which has replacement glyphs for fi and fl, but it doesn’t seem to work.
