Basically I was translating an odt file. And I’m not too sure I can get the original version again, or I would have to retranslate back again.
And I made a mistake between ctrl+x and ctrl+s… so it basically rewrote the whole document.
I’m pretty sure I should be able to charge the last version.
I tried to go through tools > options > libre office > paths > backups
But when i click on it it just opens an empty folder and ok doesnt do anything. Help pls
. I tried to go through tools > options > libre office > paths > backups
This only has any meaning, if you additionally have set Tools -> Options -> Load/Save -> General -> [x] Always create a backup copy
- and this is not set by default (and IMO not a good measure to assure backup copies for the case of a desaster. Don’t rely on that).
Does that mean I’m doomed ?
If you don’t have any versioning strategy, other means of backup and you already saved your modified version + have closed your document, so redo ( CTRL+Z
) is no longer working: Yes
Ctrl
+S
is not seen by Writer as an error but a request from user. Consequently the overwrite was done. The damage is now permanent.
When working on such a case (rewriting an existing document or translating one), it is very wise to make first a copy and work on the copy.
@anon73440385: even Ctrl
+Z
in this case will not revert the saved file to its previous state. It has been overwritten, end of the story. The only possibility is to use a filesystem salvage utility. With some journalling filesystems, this may work without too much trouble. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
even Ctrl+Z in this case will not revert the saved file to its previous state
of course not, but edits could be reverted to some previous state and "…don’t have … + closed (but may be a bit twisted expressed).
