Created on my laptop, I have a simple 1-table SQL database: no forms, no reports, no macros, no external access via an engine [yet], so just a basic one, with about 650 entries with 5 fields in each record. Having finished doing some data entry, I am now unable to save/close or exit the program. LO asks me if I want to save the record just edited, to which I obviously reply YES but from that point on I cannot exit LO or close the file - in fact I cannot close the table entry page and get back to the .odb entry-level page, so I cannot even check to see if the data HAS been saved. These events happen both with the dropdown menu option AND the red X at the top right to terminate. I have also tried the SAVE option before attempting to exit but to no avail. I am using Windows 10, LO version 7.1.1.2
Frustratingly, this has happened several times before and the only way that I found to progress was to terminate the process and then re-open LO and use the recovery option - which is a time-consuming duplication of effort and is not perfect as the last few data entries are normally missing from the recovery process. Looking at the Windows Task Manager, there are no resource hogs running and the LO process is all-but-idle so it is not seemingly trying to do anything - it is simply hanging post asking me what I wanted to do.
Other LO areas (Writer, Calc) show no problems and have worked very well for years but CALC is being shouted at a lot at the moment (first rule of engineering - shout at the problem to make it go away!)
Any clues?
Many thanks
Hello,
Your terms are a bit unclear. Would guess you are using an embedded HSQLDB database (default of Base). You may want to restart in Safe Mode (resetting the user profile). See → LibreOffice user profile.
If that is no further help, it would help if you posted a sample of your Base file without personal/confidential information.
As per the suggestions in the article - I cannot do anything with the user profile (to save as a fallback) as “the folder (or a file in it) is in use”. Likewise trying to restart in safe mode - nothing happens when I attempt this and I get no further forward as, when attempted, the running Base program asks me whether I want to save the current record - qv the OP. I have left the program running for circa 12 hours whilst I went to work to see if the input command buffering would ‘catch up’ and recognise that yes, I DO want to save the record and then exit the program but, sad to say, no such luck and I am still sitting here watching a whole lot of nothing happening.
UPDATE - I have managed to get round the problem but in a disappointing way. When asked whether I want to save the record or not, if I answer NO, then LO will allow me to close down and exit. Not satisfactory as I now need to save more frequently (more than I would like, but what the heck …) and retype what I have already input. [sloping shoulders].
You should be able to rename the user profile once all of LO is closed. Then you can restart Base to see if problem is fixed. It appears there is some problems in that area and what you are experiencing is certainly not normal.
If LO is closed and you still have an issue, see if there is another LO process running using task manager.
