Black horizontal lines when printing in draft mode

Hello. I recently got a new printer, HP OfficeJet Pro 9730. When I print in “draft” mode from Libre Office Writer version 7.8.2.2 (x86_64), it prints straight thick horizontal lines down the hole page over the print area.

I am using an HP Laptop, x64 based processor, running Windows 10 Home Version 20H2 (which I can no longer update).

The printer worked fine until it did a recent update.

Try aligning the print heads, there should be instructions in the manual for your printer

Aligning the print heads doesn’t seem to be the issue. The printer prints fine when using the regular print mode. It is only when I use the draft mode that it puts the lines on the paper.

it was working fine until it did an automatic update. I wish I could go back to the version before the update.

Does not exist, maybe 7.6.2.2? Maybe consider updating LibreOffice, see Release Plan 7.6 - The Document Foundation Wiki

Is “it” the printer? It can’t be LibreOffice. Try these instructions from HP for your printer and the most recent firmware update (search on HP site to find)

The issue impacts HP+ enabled or HP Instant Ink enrolled printers with firmware version updated to 6.23.1.15.
Perform the following steps to resolve the issue:
Confirm the firmware version. 6.23.1.15
From the printer control panel, touch Menu > Tools > Maintenance > Firmware.
Open, and then close the front door.
Press the Power button to turn the printer off, and then turn it on.
Print a page to confirm the issue is resolved.

If that doesn’t work, while the printer is on, pull the plug out of the wall socket and wait half a minute. Plug it back in and allow it to start. Does it print OK?

In case it is a problem with the document, can you upload the document that is shown your new screenshot?

  1. Click File > Save As and name it something like Lines136040.
  2. Replace the text with x’s. Click Edit > Find and Replace Ctrl+H
  3. In the dialogue:
  4. In Find enter a full stop .
  5. In Replace enter an x
  6. Tick the box Regular Expressions
  7. Click Replace All
  8. Save the document
  9. Upload it to an open comment, or to your question. Click the 7th icon from the left with tooltip Upload or drag the file from a file manager onto the open comment or question

Try to generate a pdf first. Then print the pdf (not from LibreOffice).
Same problem? Then search at Windows/printer-driver.

No problem printing from pdf in draft mode?
Try to start LibreOffice in Safe-Mode (now called Troubleshoot-mode) and test, if the problem vanishes. (If yes, backup and reset profile).

So you have not activated the ESU?

For the printer driver? (LibreOffice 7.x does not have automatic updates on Windows, and you told Windows also receives no updates…)
IMHO wasting Ink in draft mode sounds to be in line for a company selling ink… I replaced or HP years ago for other reasons, but I’m not surprised.

To not replace spaces, find instead “\S”.
