Calc keeps hanging and crashing (provisional)

Hi

I’ve been having serious problems with Calc for a while now. As I need it more frequently I need to do something about it.

This is the issue:
When spreadsheets have a moderate number of rows (say 500) Calc often hangs. This happens most often when I save, and when I sort or filter data. I then get a pop-up informing me Calc is not responding. It takes 30 seconds or more for the pop-up to disappear.

With a large number of rows this happens more frequently, but 1 time in 2 the system doesn’t recover and just crashes.

I work on a recent Dell xps 13 (32 GB memory)
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS
Version: 24.2.7.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 420(Build:2)
Ubuntu package version: 4:24.2.7-0ubuntu0.24.04.4

Any suggestions on where I could start looking for the cause of the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

like what ? average?

  1. Safe Mode
  2. https://askubuntu.com/questions/437437/gui-performance-monitor-tool

Hi
I’ve added a sample file to the original post.

It’s probably not every single time, although it feels like that. I realise that is not relevant. I’ve edited the original post. I’ll start monitoring more closely and also keep the monitoring tool open while working with calc.

Waiting time is about 30 seconds for documents with 1000 to 2000 rows.
For larger documents it is more if it happens at all.

thanks for following up :+1:

I see two issues that could be impacting performance.

  • Excessive cell formatting.
Delete all columns starting with U and all rows starting with 5001.
  • Display page breaks.
Menu / Tools / Options / LibreOffice Calc / View, Visual Aids. Uncheck Page breaks.
