I encountered a problem involving background colour changes in ‘Calc’. I noticed it first with ‘LibreOffice’ version 24 and now I use version 25.8.1 (on a ‘Windows 10’ operating system).
In my not complex sheet, I need to use 130 different background colours for distinguishing. The sheet was created in ‘Calc’ in modern ‘XLSX’ format, it does not run any macro scripts, no conditional formatting rule is set, and actually there is no formula in use. Setting the background colours for all cells is done by hand so it is not an automated process.
The problem is that ‘Calc’ now changes the background colour of many cells upon re-opening the same document. When I first noticed this, I have already used about 110 background colours, including custom ones which were added by ‘HEX’ values. Everything looked correct while the sheet was open — then the whole ‘LibreOffice’ was closed and the same document was re-opened from the regular ‘Windows Explorer’. The newly opened sheet permanently changed a lot of background colours so their ‘HEX’ values were also modified — some of them close to the original gradient of the background colour, and some were changed on the spectrum, with a big amount of added grey (this is just an observation regarding colours, I wonder if it is directly related to the origin of the problem). It is quite a strange phenomenon.
I reset the sheet 2 times in version 25.8.1 (by clearing the background colours of all cells):
— First, I tried raising the amount of background colours to about 125 (hoping that maybe this problem was addressed from version 24 to the latest 25). The result was the same.
— Second, I tried using only the colours from the colouring palette (which are named, such as ‘Dark Orange 2’). The result was surprisingly the same. I have a hunch that there is a bug either in the code for saving background colours or in the code for opening the sheet. I have not tested this further so I do not know what happens, for example, with just 60 background colours (as I need to use 130 different background colours to move on with the contents of the sheet, I can only wait for a solution or a suggestion for now).
