Can I reference a page such that the reference changes automatically?

I’m formatting a book ready for publication. From time to time, I want to include a note referring to another page (for example, “See above, p.76”). I’m trying to find a way to include this as a reference so that if the page number changes, the reference to it also changes automatically. Is this possible?
I thought maybe cross-referencing would help but I’m perplexed about how it works.
It seems I would have to insert for example a bookmark on the page I want to reference, then insert a cross-reference to that bookmark, displaying the page number.

To extend the question a bit, is it possible to include a cross-reference to a bookmark in a different file (i.e. a different book?)

A cross-reference is what you need.

But you don’t reference a page because pages don’t exist per se. They are allocated on demand to accommodate text and this is unpredictable (from your point of view).

You reference some “object” such as a heading, a bookmark or a manually inserted reference (this is equivalent to a bookmark). When the cross-reference is inserted, you can display the corresponding text, chapter number, page number or above/below flag.

If you need more information, please update your question (don’t use a comment or, worse, an answer) to describe with more details what you want to reference. And mention OS name, exact LO version and save format.
