specifics - on Mac, with Endnote 4 or 5
Yes, you most probably can.
This is how you would do it on a Windows machine:
In LO Writer go to the Tools menu and choose Extension Manager. Click Add in the Extension Manager window, navigate to the folder : Program Files\EndNote X5\Product-Support\CWYW. Select the EndNote.oxt file and click Open. The Endnote extension will now appear in the list. Exit LibreOffice Writer and then restart it. The Endnote X5 toolbar and a new top menu entry named EndNote X5 appears between Tools and Window.

It worked for me with Endnote X5 and LibreOffice 3.5.5.3 on a Windows XP SP3 machine.
I think it should be pretty similar on a Mac (i.e. find and install the Endnote.oxt extension)
I’m an avid endnote user and I recently had to uninstall and reinstall windows so I lost my Microsoft office and installed libreoffice instead. This post told me exactly what to do to be able to use endnote with libreoffice. The instructions are easy to follow and it works well!
Thank you!
Don’t think Endnote can ever be used as such with LibreOffice or other non-MS software.
Maybe this question/answer can help you: <Is there a tool to manage bibliography?
Problem is I want to use Endnote X7 because X8 forces you to be online or sign in or some such thing and due to privacy reasons I don’t want to Endnote to be online and I don’t want Clarivate taking telemetrics and analyzing my data. They will end up losing customers if they continue to do this. Standalone products should mean standalone software not requiring an internet connection.
So Endnote.oxt for X7 does not work in libreoffice. It gives the following error. “The extension 'EndNote® Cite While You Write™ does not work on this computer”. Other products also require you create an account and have you login. Probably just end up going open source software from sourceforge as greedy companies buying out endnote wish to make money off of selling out people’s privacy.
Thanks for the great Post, I wouldn’t have figured this out on my own.
BTW, Pedro’s answer works also for Endnote x6 for Windows 7.

Thanks for the post. It helped me to use EndNote x7 with office writer in Windows 7.
