use File -Open and scroll down in drop down Filter and you’ll get:

In my own experience, I have opened many of my old .wpd documents with LO Writer simply by clicking on them and selecting Writer as the choice. I have never used the filter. Some fancy formatting is lost but relatively straightforward text documents have all opened successfully. It probably depends on which version of WP they were prepared with, and which version of LO you use to open them.
@ve3oat - presenting the Filter thing in the answer is more or less intended to provide an evidence for the conclusion (and a method how to check in advance, which format(s) might be supported). Hence you are absolutely right …
