Cannot set default printer in libreoffic (all applications)

Print dialog window defaults to wrong printer, wrong paper size and wrong duplex settings. I cannot fine any tools options to set these defaults. The options under tools>options>print (e.g., reduce gradient, reduce transparency, etc. ) are useless and there are no options for setting defaults for selecting printer or any useful print parameters (e.g., paper size, orientation, margins, tabs, etc.)

Operating system (linux, ubuntu 24.04) default printer is set to correct printer. Default setting on printer set to duplex but libreoffice applications continue to print on one side only, print on wrong size paper or sends output to printer downstairs unless I remember to change the printer settings (bloody nuisance).

For starters

  1. Is the printer on before opening LibreOffice and lpstat -t is showing default printer.

  2. Since linux, I assume you are using CUPS and have verified information via localhost:631/printers.

  3. Check file $HOME/.cups/lpoptions.

  4. In LibreOffice check, File > Printer Settings….

  5. I spotted this in the online help

Setting up Printer and Fax Under UNIX Based Platforms

This is also documented in the Getting Started Guide, page 37 - Printing > Default printer. The documentation does say “provides some examples”. So I believe the documentation is saying go to your System Settings and select the default printer.

I’m not using Ubuntu, but here is a link to the Ubuntu Printer documentation. This process can be different by distribution and/or desktop.
