Use Libre Writer for writing essays. Made a template and have been using it happily for ages. On last update format of Writer the appearance has completely changed and I have lost all my templates.
I’m not particularly good on computers and this has stumped me
Any ideas.
Lindsay
I don’t think you have lost your document templates. Perhaps the link to the directory is no longer correct?
Check in the menu under Extras > Options > LibreOffice > Paths
whether the link to your previous directory is still correct.
For further comments please enter your operating system and LibreOffice version.
What casual users describe as “template” is often not what LO qualifies as (technical) template documents (with file extension .ott). Word “template” in this case has the layman meaning of skeleton or example document that must be duplicated before modification.
Please tell us how we should understand “template”. For best advice, attach one of your templates (preferentially the smallest one).
Hi There,
I have attached my simple essay template. This is what I cannot open in the new Libre Update.
Appreciate you looking at this for me.

Hi There.
I really don’t understand about paths., and wouldn’t know what the correct path should be!
It is showing as:
C\Users\Lindsay\AppDate\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\user\template
Appreciate your help.
Lindsay
What you have uploaded is a single page, A4 portrait with no content other then a footer with the text "Page " followed by a page number field. Should I expect to see anything else?
It is not a proper template file of type .ott
And, apart from modified margins in Default Page Styles, it contains no custom style nor customisation of built-in styles. What bothers me most, if is supposed to be the initial state of a fresh document, is the fact you kept Default Paragraph Style for formatting your text instead of switching to Body Text which is the intended style for the main topic.
I also notice that the footer has received direct formatting (font size 9pt) instead of customising Footer built-in style.
This is definitely not a template in Writer parlance and I fear you use Writer just like a mechanical typewriter.
When Istudy I open this file and use the toolbars, as they are, to write my documents.
Lindsay
I set up the document so that the Toolbars are able to do what I need to accomplish on the document.
Sorry to bother.
Lindsay
You don’t get in the way at all!
The use of toolbars is an option that was mainly set up for people switching from MS Office. As long as you only write one page at a time, using the toolbars is still an option, but not very elegant.
It is better to use styles. This is the next level for good and longer documents. If you are ready to go to this level, let us know.
There are many users here who can help you, but it will also be a journey where you have to be willing to learn new things.
You are right, I don’t get it at all!
I’m nearly 70 and as I get older my relationship with technology becomes more fraught.
The way I use Libre has worked perfectly for a long time, and it has just changed. When researching, if I find a point I wish to keep, I write a simple document, outlining the point and adding a few explanatory notes.
These I index and save, for future reference.
I cannot do this with the ease I had learned. For me, this is extremely frustrating.
