Cursor changed to dark thick blinking line - now it deletes / changes anything under it. Impossible for me to make corrections without redoing the entire paragraph.
You have accidentally set it to Overwrite mode.

At the bottom of the screen, in the Status Bar you will see Overwrite, click to change back to Insert mode.
