Change colour of negative numbers

I’m using Dark mode and Dark application colours, but I’d like to change the default colour red used for negative numbers (to Light Red 2 so that it’s less vibrant and a bit easier to read with a black background). Is there an option somewhere to change this?

I tried using conditional formatting but the font colour is ignored (but I can change other font styles). The default colour red used for negative numbers must take higher precedence than anything specified in conditional formatting, it seems.

Thanks

@mfearby’s solution is a much better solution than coditional formatting in most cases. Unless you have multiple columns of numbers with different formatting requirements, then you are looking at conditional formatting and Styles, or just Styles.

Dcumentation can be found in the LibreOffice online help at Highlighting Negative Numbers.

Documentation can be found for colors in the LibreOffice online help at Number Format Codes.

The LibreOffice bookshelf guides might also help: Bookshelf

I have found a workaround as follows, but having an option somewhere to change the default Red everywhere, would be nice to have:

  1. Highlight column with numbers
  2. Right-click, format cells
  3. Near the bottom of the Format Cells window, under Options, tick the Negative numbes red checkbox
  4. Change [RED] in the format code text box to [COLOR53], or any of these other pre-defined colour codes
  5. Click OK

This isn’t much of a workaround, evidently, because this isn’t remembered the next time I open the file. I apply the changes (and Libre office recognises the file has changed, so I save it), but next time I open it, the colours are gone :frowning:

If you are saving as .xlsx it is unlikely that .xlsx format supports that customisation.

Always save in native format, .ods, and only Save a copy as .xlsx if you need to share the file with someone who cannot afford Libreoffice.

Number Format Code: Not all color codes are saved

It follows that:

  1. In addition to the 8 colors listed in Calc Help, there are two additional, undocumented colors available i.e. BROWN and GREY (BRAUN and GRAU in the German UI).

  2. By default, some color codes in the COLORx format will not be lost when the file is reloaded. Their names will be converted to their corresponding predefined names:
    COLOR1BLACK
    COLOR6GREY
    COLOR12WHITE
    COLOR13YELLOW
    COLOR17RED
