Change Tracking in Word Documents (`*.docx`) Not Working

I work in an academic environment where Microsoft Word is the predominant tool. For years I have interacted with my colleagues without much trouble using LibreOffice and exchanging change tracked documents back and forth.
In recent months the underlying interoperability seems to have significantly worsened and change tracking in *.docx appears all but broken.

Does anyone have insight how this comes about? Did Office 365 change something? Did LibreOffice?

My current solution is saving change-tracked as *.odt, importing into Google Docs and exporting as *.docx from there - invalidating my the anti-IT-coproration sentiment underlying the use of LibreOffice in the first place and also loosing advanced features such as 3rd party software inserted citations.
How do others deal with this? Are there more suited libre software solutions?

I currently use

Version: 25.2.7.2 (X86_64)
Build ID: 520(Build:2)
CPU threads: 2; OS: Linux 6.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-US (C.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

on Fedora-42.

Thanks for any pointers.
