Changing LibreOffice Writer display (in Windows 10) to accomodate vision changes

I’m now in my 70’s with unexpected changes to my vision which can’t be handled with a new prescription (and I’ve already had cataract implants). One major problem is colors, and the most irksome is that the default color for links is difficult for me to read. 007FFF is much easier because it’s lighter than the default color. Is there a way to change my default template so all links are automatically this color? I’m talking about links I include in a document and those that are in in documents that I open.

TIA.

I use Windows 10.
But I do know how to erase all that stuff (using Revo Uninstaller), so I’m starting from scratch.

Accessibility is one of the first things I check with a new Windows install, and they don’t have a way (that I can find) to change text color on one kind of link, which would be great because then it would be global. I will refer that question to AskWoody.com. Thanks for sparking the part of my brain that cross-thinks! LibreOffice doesn’t get that specific with accessibility options.

You can change the color of the link by modifying the Internet Link character style in the Sidebar.

While you can’t save this change in the default template, you can create a new template after making this modification and any others you want to make.

After making the changes you want, go to File>Template>Save as Template… Give it a name such as “_My Default Template”. Choose a Category such as “My Templates”. Be sure to check the box “Set as default template”. Click “Save”.

When you open a new document, the _My Default Template will open with changes you made to the Internet Link character style and any other changes you made.

When you open a saved document, however, the link might be a different color. If so, you could click on the Styles Actions icon and select “Load Styles from Template”. Select the template you made and the styles you want to load. Then click “OK”. There may be a potential problem if you’ve made other style changes.

The most serious of these is the presence of direct formatting which always takes precedence over styling, thus masking the changes in the styles (making them ineffective). Character styles are often neglected and replaced by direct formatting because there is no equivalent in Word and user interface erroneously encourages Ctrl+I, Ctrl+B and the like instead of Emphasis, *Strong Emphasis, …

I put off doing anything in response to your reply because I decided to uninstall/reinstall the suite and thus get rid of all the junk that’s built up in my current template. Starting from scratch (and with the current version of LibreOffice) gives me the opportunity to do this and incorporate your suggestions with nothing to interfere.

Thank you.

Uninstall might not do what you expect because:

  • the User Profile is retained
  • It doesn’t change your existing documents

I don’t know what operating system you have, but if it is Windows have you considered some of the options in Start Menu > Settings > System > Accessibility?
Also the LibreOffice ones that tie in with the system in Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Accessibility

I have no idea how to do that. Can you walk me through it, please?

I checked both of those and neither has anything that seems to apply to my problem. I think I will ask my local indep. computer shop if they know of something. Thank you for suggesting things that made me think of that.

Found it! I was looking at the wrong things in the sidebar. Now to try it!
