Character "scale width" does not work in Text Boxes and Shapes

The wider text is 100% scale width. The narrower text is 50% scale width.

The upper text is in the document body.
The text in the dotted area is in a Text Box.
The text in the blue-shaded area is in a Rectangle Shape.

I’m not sure if there is a workaround to make “sale width” works in Text Boxes and Shapes.

I used Courier New font.

Since I can’t observe what you describe on my LibreOffice 7.0.3.1 on openSUSE Leap 15.2 on KDE/Plasma desktop enviroment (using native TDF packages) it comes to the ever same questions:

  • Which operating system do you use?
  • Which LibreOffice versions do you use?

Sorry. I didn’t mention my OS. It’s Windows 10, 64-bit.
LibreOffice 7.0.2.2.

Text boxes as well as all other drawing shapes are not “text” objects. They are graphic objects.

Writer manages a “text flow” and all its formatting power and attributes apply only to the text flow. The graphic feature (the “Drawing toolbar”) is only a courtesy tool offered as a reduced version of full Draw app capability. This is meant to add simple decoration to your main text.

  • Either use Draw to design a picture with versatile tools, picture you then copy and paste into your Writer document.

  • Or, in case you want to insert some formatted text aside your main flow in an awkward position, put it inside a frame. Note that text in a frame is not logically connected to the main flow, i.e. it is not “before” or “after” some location or “between” some words, it is separate from the main flow.

Frame works as expected.
So I’ll avoid Text Box and Shape when I want more complex formatting.
Thanks.
