Checkerboard from Transparent Image Background still visible

I added an image that has a transparent background to a page in libre writer. The checkered background (transparent area) remains visible on the document. I checked the print preview and it also shows the checkered background.

How can I erase the transparent, checkerboard, area so that just the page color shows through?

Thanks for any help.

Save your image as png which supports transparency. Then click Insert > image, navigate to the png, select it and click OK
I should add that writer does not display a checkerboard pattern for transparent images so the checkerboard pattern seems to be part of your image. You will need to remove the parts you want to be transparent and save as png.

Insert image .png
The problem is caused when you paste from the windows clipboard: the transparent section becomes colored. Someone should fix this =)

Pasting images from clipboard is a very poor way to add images. It depends very much on the application it is copied from, some might put only a bitmap image on the clipboard and then Writer will convert it to png but of course .bmp does not support transparency. Other apps like the GIMP will put png file on clipboard. If it is a jpg that is copied then Writer will convert the image to png increasing file size but keeping the jpg artefacts. Pasted images are always saved as png in Writer.

The best way to place images is to

  1. Click Insert > Image. Or
  2. Drag image from a file manager such as Explorer

Both those add the original file to Writer so the image retains the benefits of that file type.
