Clearing Styles but Retaining Italics etc

Hello,

I cleared the formatting on a document so I can build up the styles from scratch for ebook creation.

In the process, I realised that all the italics in the book were lost (and potentially other text characteristics that would have to be reinserted).

Is there are way to remove just the styles on the text, without losing essential settings like bold/italics etc. that would have be manually put back in if not?

Thanks

Create a character style with italics, one exists already, Emphasis but you might want for quotations, so right click No character style and select New. In the General tab give it a name, e.g. Quotations, in the Font tab select only Italic. OK.

  1. Click Edit > Find & Replace (Ctrl+H)
  2. In the dialogue, click the Format button and in that dialogue select the Font tab. In the style field select Italic. OK
  3. Click the button Find All. Close the dialogue
  4. In the Character styles pane, double click your italic style to apply it to all the selected text.

The character style will be kept when you remove direct formatting.

You may need to do the same for Bold Italic & Bold

Many thanks. I got this to work, but there is a potential issue in that I appear to have to set parameters like font size, so this sets all the italics at a uniform font size.

Undo back to before you did find and replace.

Right click the character style and select Edit style.
Select the Font tab and click the button Reset to parent. OK
Select edit style again and set only Italic . OK

Do find and replace again

I thinks that there are no need to undo; just…

…, Apply, set Italic, and OK.
Look at Content in the Organizer tab.

Exact. Reset to Parent is always available to put all parameters in the active tab to “transparent” state. All parameters have at least two states:

  • “transparent” where the value is inherited from the parent in the style inheritance chain,
  • “forced” when it has been touched (set or clear for binary parameters, or some value for “continuous” parameters like size).

By “forced”, I mean any action has been exercised on the parameter. This explains why it can’t be returned to “transparent” state with clicks on it. Only the button can.

A style can be modified any time. This is very handy and useful to tune appearance without changing anything in text.
