Is there a simple way of closing an open document in Writer without also the entire program? I downloaded the software yesterday so I’m assuming I have the latest version. My OS is Windows 10, 64-bit.
Thanks.

Actually, the only time I see the second X is when more than one document is open. I know Ctrl and F4 closes the open document, Writer and the Start Centre, but that is the opposite of what I am trying to achieve! I just want a way of closing a document without closing Writer. I find it hard to believe this is not a standard feature of the program.
In Windows you press Ctrl+W to close the open document, or you click the small x icon below the X in the top right corner of the window.
When all open documents are closed, you end up in the LibreOffice “hub” or “start center”.
For MacOS users, the corresponding keypress is Cmd+W
Thank you for your response.
I’ve found that if only one document is open when you press ctrl+W, then the entire program closes; also, I don’t go back to the hub.
Moreover, I can’t see the second, smaller X to which you refer; that just doesn’t appear for me.
Am I missing something??
you are right, the LibreOffice goes back to the hub and the next loading takes zero time, compared with starting up.
I’ve just noticed that the small X appears when I open a document saved in a source external to the software; the desktop, for example. It does not feature if I open the document from within Writer.
Don’t know if this makes a difference, but I thought I’d mention it anyway.
When there is more than one document, you won’t see the second ×.
Ctrl + F4 also closes documents (and the Start Center).
EDIT:
No document, just the Start Center:
