Copy Comments to another .doc

I had a client make changes to a document, send me the new version of the document.
However, I have comments in the OLD document that I’d like to transfer over to the new doc.

Can I copy and/or transfer the Comments from the old document to the new one?

Libre Writer version 7.1.0.3

Do you really mean a .doc formatted file, i.e. non-native M$ Word format ? You may then encounter losses during the conversion from this alien format to internal and back when saving.

Transferring comment is done by “regenerating” them. You copy comment contents in the old document. You Insert>Comment in the new document and paste the old contents.

This procedure doesn’t preserve all information. In particular, you lose the name of the original commenter if s/he is not you.

It’s actually a ‘.docx’ type of document.
Thanks!

How do I copy them?

Through the “traditional” copy procedure: select the text to be copied or Ctrl+A if you’re confident in the context range, then Ctrl+C to store into the clipboard.

So highlight the actual text within the comment, ctrl +C, Find on the new document where the old marker goes, create a new marker, paste in text. Is that right?

Was looking for something a little easier than that. Something less time-consuming. But is that the only way?

I fear this is the only way because 1) comments are “local” to a document, 2) they need both some text and an anchor point.

I just tested another procedure following your remark about the unfriendly method exposed above.

If you’re accurate enough to click exactly before the comment anchor, then Shift+right-arrow, you can now Ctrl+C the comment and paste it at the new anchor point in the other document.

It doesn’t make a big difference but may be faster.

How to work with foreign file formats exchanged via attachemnts (email, chat whatever) with any program (office suite or any other editor of anything):

  1. You receive a file in a foreign file format. Open the attachment. It will be a read-only version until you save your own working copy in your application’s native file format.
  2. As a last step after editing the file, you convert your working copy to the foreign file format and send this file back to your co-editor.
  3. Next time you get another instance of the same document, you can repeat step 1) overwriting the old working copy or adding another version of it.

Both of you still have all the other versions as attachments in your inbox and outbox. And the co-editor should keep his working copy in the native file format of his application.

I did not mention Word or Writer. It applies to spreadsheets, presentations, musik files, movies, desktop publishing and all kinds of creative work on shared documents. Always edit your work in the native file format of the application you are using.
P.S. simply store the received docx with all the comments as the new working copy in odt format.
