Copy/paste from character map program yields a unicode designation, not the character

If I need to use a character that is not on my keyboard in a text file or email, etc. , I just open up my character map program, double click on the character, it appears in the box below, and I can cut/paste it into whatever program I wish.
Except LOW, where, for š (see, it even works here!) I get \u0161

Is this intended behavior, or is this a bug?

(Yes, I did find LOW’s “Insert Special Character”, which I was able to use, but since in LOW, I can find all kinds of things, from pictures, to website text, and all just copy/paste s just fine into LOW and perfect, but not single characters from a character map program…)

I am using Debian Testing and Wayland/Sway 1.5.1 .

I don’t have Debian so cannot help with why OS character map does not work.
The number you get, is the Unicode number of the character, U+0161. This means it is quite near the beginning of any character list. First of all, you can type U+0161 (often just 161 will suffice) and then immediately after press Alt+X to get the lower case s with caron.
In LibreOffice you can click Insert > Special character and just 161 characters through the list you will see Latin small letter s with caron, š.

A quicker way is enter the word caron in the search field and the dialogue will present all the characters with caron in the description. Maybe, search letter s is more convenient.
If you use an international keyboard layout you can probably create the character using a modifier key plus s depending on the language. Cheers, Al
