Could someone shed some light on this? [the images don’t appear]

Hi!
.
I recently became interested in Linux. I’m dual-booting with Windows and tried a few distributions like Kubuntu and Fedora WS 42 before finally choosing Ubuntu Studio version 24.04.3 LTS, which is designed for audio production needs with a low-latency kernel.
.
I have a database that works perfectly fine in the Windows (11) environment. This database displays images or photos, and the image control is linked to a table field containing the URL of these images.
.

.
Under Kubuntu and Fedora, the database displayed the images just like in Windows, but under Ubuntu Studio, the images don’t appear.
.

.
I’ve already made sure that the LibreOffice versions are the same (or nearly the same) on both Windows and Linux.
.
Version: 25.8.1.1 (X86_64)
Build ID: 54047653041915e595ad4e45cccea684809c77b5
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 11 X86_64 (build 26200); UI render: Skia/Vulkan; VCL: win
Locale: fr-CA (fr_CA); UI: fr-FR
Calc: CL threaded
.
Version: 25.8.2.2 (X86_64)
Build ID: d401f2107ccab8f924a8e2df40f573aab7605b6f
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 6.14; UI render: default; VCL: kf5 (cairo+xcb)
Locale: fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); UI: fr-FR
Calc: CL threaded
.
Is there a specific configuration I’m missing or something I’ve forgotten to do with Ubuntu or LibreOffice to get the image control to display the URLs? It’s as if there’s no internet access. Could the Firefox web browser be blocking access?
.
Speaking of Firefox, I’m using the version pre-installed by the system. Should I be using the latest version available on the Mozilla website instead?
.
This situation is quite puzzling. So, could someone shed some light on this?
.

Maybe a person, who can see your URLs…
.
Local, LAN, Internet? Accessibe via password.?
.
How is your latest version installed? Snap? Rights of containers or the user in Ubuntu Studio to access the location?

Did you really install a version of LibreOffice, which is from libreoffice.org, not directly from Ubuntu?
.
Are the images in the same path under Ubuntu like they are under Fedora or Kubuntu?

I’m not familiar with Linux; I’m still learning, and many things are unknown to me yet, but it’s funny. I trusted the distribution’s installer, which was very user-friendly.
.
Regarding the URLs, they come from two websites: AsianWiki and Rakuten Viki.

.
Local, local area network (LAN), Internet? Accessible by password?
My database and the internet are not password-protected.

.

.
How was your latest version installed? Via Snap?
The LibreOffice version was installed via the .deb file using commands in Konsole.
.

.
What are the container or user permissions in Ubuntu Studio to access this location?
I don’t really understand what container or user permissions are.
.
I am the only user and have all access…

Yes, I have a shortcut on the desktop that points to the file location on another hard drive. It was the same with Kubuntu and Fedora.

Open LibreOffice in Ubuntu. Go to Help → About LibreOffice. Copy the content of the version information, special the Build ID.

Version: 25.8.2.2 (X86_64)
Build ID: d401f2107ccab8f924a8e2df40f573aab7605b6f
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 6.14; UI render: default; VCL: kf5 (cairo+xcb)
Locale: fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); UI: fr-FR
Calc: CL threaded

I would try this: Copy a link from the table. Paste it into an empty Writer document. Return to get a link. Click on this link. Will the image appear?

@RobertG

If I copy one of the URLs stored in the ‘Poster’ field of the ‘TFilmSeries’ table in the database and paste that URL into a Writer document, and then open that hyperlink from there, the corresponding web page opens in Firefox without any problems.

That works on Windows 11 but not on Ubuntu Studio (no images).

Is that could be related to the JAVA version used with linux LO?

Okay, the problem seems to be fixed. I uninstalled the packages that came from the LibreOffice website.

I decided to try the installation suggested by Discover with version 25.8.2.2, released on October 8, 2025, and distributed by Flathub.

Everything seems to be working perfectly. It’s still strange, though; the version from the LibreOffice website was the same, but it didn’t display the images.

If someone could explain the difference between the working Flathub version and the non-working version from the LibreOffice website, it would help me understand the issue better…

Quite true…
.
In a way you worked around the problem. Snaps and flatpacks bring their own system/libraries in the container, and this obviously fixed your problem.
.
I have no clue where the culprit might be. Your pictures come from the net, so rights are usually not the problem. Maybe a not compatible library…

Thanks Wanderer for the feedback. I realize that in the Linux environment, there are several package distributors and that there can be differences in version and compatibility. I also realize that the version distributed on the LibreOffice website is not guaranteed to work.
.
Nevertheless, I’m happy to have found a working version.
