Creating markings at 1/2 or 1/3 of page

Hello everyone,

I’ve tried to insert markings into a document to help with punching holes to file pages or folding it to fit into an envelope. I would need small markings in form of a dot or short line on the left margin in my case, in order to easily see where the middle of the page is or how to divide it into thirds. These markings would obviously need to be printed out.
You may find these kind of markings familiar from letters that are printed and folded automatically, for example when they come from a government agency or larger company.
I sadly couldn’t find any hints on how to do this or if it is even possible to do so in writer.
Thanks in advance to anyone answering
Have a good day

There is no built-in method for that. But you can place whatever graphical objects in arbitrary place of a page.

In your case, the marks would be a property of a page style, and thus would need to be anchored to the page style’s parts - namely, to a header or footer text (so you’d need to define a header or a footer). And since their positioning would not depend on the text position, you should set up the position relative to page. See this FAQ.

CAUTION! This is tricky if you’re not familiar with styles in general. And drawing objects complicate things.

Your first step is to enable header in your current page style or all of the used ones if you want your markings to appear on all pages.

The main difficulty is the drwing object will be anchored to a paragraph in the page text area, even if you put your cursor in the header. So, to settle things right:

  1. insert your shape in the margin
  2. select it and Ctrl+C it (copy it into the clipboard)
  3. click in the header to activate it and have the cursor there
  4. Ctrl+V to paste it “in the header”
It will appear in the margin at a different position
  5. select and erase the original shape
  6. rignt-click on the “header shape” and Position & Size to fine tune the position
    • keep Anchor To paragraph (very important)
    • make position relative to Entire Page
    • tune position From left and From Top
