Creation of unwanted boxes

I am making genealogy chart with Libreoffice. When I type | (vertical line) then some spaces and another | and then Return, the program creates a horizontal box. (I don’t know what that box is called). How do I prevent it from making these boxes?

It seems to be a shortcut for a table(cell).

Hit shortcut CTRL+Z after generating a table(cell) and the pipe symbols ( | (vertical line)) remain as wanted.

Thank you. That works. But is there a way to turn the feature off? It keeps happening many, many times.

Don’t create genealogy charts with Writer. It is certainly a nightmare. Use Draw instead. Draw has connector objects which can link two text boxes (with or without border or background to make a distinction about gender). When you move the boxes to improves general appearance and optimise layout, the connectors are automatically redrawn to always represent the relation between the boxes.
