Default behaviour dragging images

Hi,
When an image is dragged into writer it is always inserted anchored to character, and the image itself at the top of the paragraph where the cursor is. I then change to anchor as character, and this leaves the image in an unwanted position, I have to cut it and paste it into the position in the text where I need it.
Is it possible for me to change the default behaviour so that the image is inserted anchored as character at the position in the text where it is dropped? It would save me no end of time if this is possible.
Thanks
Gary

There is common confusion between anchor and position. These two notions collapse to a single one when an image (or more generally) a frame is anchored As character, i.e. it is made part of the text flow in the form of a (huge) "character.

Anchoring To character is basically the same as To paragraph except you add a request for a specific page placement, should a page break occur inside the anchoring paragraph (that is, the frame being set before or after the break). You can send the frame anywhere in the page, even far away from the anchor. Moving the anchor does not change hte position of the image (dragging the anchor is not the same as dragging the image, which illustrates the independence of both notions).

There are two ways to handle your request:

  • Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>Formatting Aids
Change Image Anchor to your preferred mode (As Character)
  • modify Graphics frame style
Since inserted image are styled Graphics by default, open the Type tab of this built-in style. Change the Anchor mode and OK

Note that dragging object (except text) in Writer is usually a bad idea (save for experimenting) because it creates difficult to detect and remove direct formatting.

PS: you didn’t mention your OS name nor LO version; the suggested options changed was introduced in some recent release and may not be present on yours if it is too old.

  • Default anchor for newly added images can be set per ToolsOptionsLibreOffice WriterFormatting Aids tdf#99646

Fantastic! Thank you.
