I have tried to define the print area in calc byhighlighting the required cells and then FORMAT- PRINT RANGES-DEFINE
However when I click on print preview it shows a preview covering multiple pages instead of just one page

This is not unusual, if your single print range doesn’t fit into one page, unless you have set
Format -> Page -> Tab: Sheet -> Scaling mode: Fit print range(s) on number of pages
to
Number of pages: 1
It would be unusual, if the print preview shows multiple sheets on multiple pages, which could only happen, if you had selected multiple sheets while defining print ranges through Format -> Print Ranges -> Define
.
Thank you Opaque
Using Format > Page >Sheet >Scaling mode : Fit print range(s) on number of pages to Number of pages 1
has solved the problem for me .
