"Disable hardware acceleration": what does it mean?

I restarted LibreOffice with “Disable hardware acceleration” checked, and for the time being LO seems to be running smoothly again.

My simple question is, what is hardware acceleration? Can I confidently continue using LO without it, or will I eventually need to enable it again?

macOS Monterey 12.2.1
LibreOffice 7.3.0.3

According to tdf#146842 ,
Skia will no longer be active on macOS by default in 7.3.1, which will be released in a few weeks: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.3#7.3.1_release

So leave it disabled until you upgrade then
