I have a Master diary document moved from an old NAS to the new Synology NAS. I cannot find a way to open a copy so that I can add/edit the contents. I am not offered the copy option when I open the document, but if I try to edit it, I am told that it is locked - no option is offered. I cannot find a hidden locked file to delete. I did “Select all” and “Copy” and “Paste” into the laptop documents folder, but that still gives me a locked file. I also tried renaming the document, but that was still locked. Laptop is now on Windows11. I have ticked “show hidden files”. Though I still have the old Buffalo NAS, it won’t run on Windows11. I was able to move the contents by using Buffalo’s attached USB back-up disc which the laptop could read and copy files to the Synology NAS. How can I obtain an editable copy please?
Can you write anything from another program to the NAS? I suggest to search on internet for something like microsoft windows 11 write to nas
Thank you EarnestAI. I can write anything in the laptop documents to the Synology NAS. Syncback free writes the diary to the NAS, as scheduled. My photographs also are sent to NAS. The problem is when I get the Master diary from the NAS to the laptop, I cannot edit the file because it is locked. I have just reconnected the Buffalo USB drive to the laptop and transferred the Master diary to the Laptop, having first deleted the lock files, but the download on the laptop is still locked.

Thank you fpy, I shall look at your link tomorrow.
I don’t think the problem is with the Synology NAS coupling to the laptop; that seems to be working OK.
I am guessing, that when I was using the LibreOffice Master diary on the previous Windows10 laptop, it may not have been shut down properly when saved to the old Buffalo NAS. That folder and many others were coppied across to the Buffalo USB back-up disc. It was those copies on the Buffalo USB disc that I copied onto the new Synology NAS, because it was impossible to run both NAS units together on the network. (Unsupported old Buffalo won’t work with Win11). Is it possible that the Master Diary file and its lock file have become separated; now there seems to be no way to remove the lock on the Master diary file.
If the lock file is not in the same folder then it can have no effect.
Can you Save As to a different name?
Right click the file in your file manager and select Properties, in the dialogue that opens, select the General tab, is *Read Only * ticked? If so untick it. If there is an Unblock box in the same tab, then untick that too.
In the Security tab, make sure you have Read and Write permissions.
Thankyou EarnestAI,
I have “saved as” and looked at the Properties. Read only is not ticked. There is no unblock box. In SEcurity there are full permissions including Read & Write.
When opened I cannot edit it with a message “Write protected content cannot be changed”. In the listing the LibreOffice icon is black, not blue like all the other unlocked files. It looks as though perhaps the only solution is to disconnect the Synology NAS and reconnect the old Buffalo Nas using the old Windows10 defective laptop and see if I can find the Master diary and see if it is editable.

Thank you fpy. I have added version info to my question, but could not add a screenshot - no icon?
Thanks for the 2 links.
In your link “Protecting comment in LibreOffice Writer” there is a paragraph headed “Turning off Protections”. I followed “Menu - Format - Sections” & I was then able to select all the sub sections in the Navigator table (Using click & SHIFT and Click), and then uncheck the Protect box under Write protection. Job done, that worked. Thanks
good.
so, nothing to do with NAS ?!

or you can directly paste any image in your message.
No nothing to do with NAS, but I was ignorant of the need to make sure documents are not locked before moving them to other drives.
Thanks for “Upload” etc.
