When I open a new LO document it is enlarged and runs off the computer screen. The type size is listed as 12, but it looks like 16. When I open some of my saved documents, they are the correct size. Other documents run off the computer screen to the right.
And what is the question?
Window size and zoom ratio are remembered from session to session. If you want a smaller size, adjust the window (and also zoom factor to fix your type size issue) and change something in the document. Save it. Next time it will open as you saved it.
If you can’t reach the window handles to resize it, procedure depends on the OS which you didn’t name.

I am currently using ver 7.5.9.2 (windows 10) and have found a similar issue. When opening a WRITER document, it opens windowed and remembers Zoom, Font size and location in the document but the window fills the screen. It does not remember window size. CALC, on the other hand, always remembers window size. Can’t speak for any other document types as I don’t use them. I do find it strange that this behaviour is not common to WRITER and CALC.
It is the operating system that remembers window size. In Windows, the size and position of the last closed window for a program is the size and position of the first opened window. The size of the second to last closed window will be the size of the second opened window, etc.
This sizing specifically excludes Microsoft Office which sets the same awkward size and position regardless.
