Hello,
I’m using LibreOffice Writer version: 6.0.7.3 Build ID: 1:6.0.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.10 to open a .doc file. The problem is that all footnote numbers are doubled. There is no such problem when I open the document in MS Office.
I hat to switch to MS Office just to avoid this problem, so I appreciate if you tell me how can I fix it.
The document format .doc is an obsolete format. LibreOffice 6.0.7.3 is three years old, current stable version is 7.1.5.2. Even so, the problem is probably in the file itself. Do any other files exhibit the same issue?
Can you attach a document with random text showing the problem? Click the edit icon on your question to attach such a document. Cheers, Al
Thanks for the tips, I’m using default Libreoffice on my Ubuntu 18.04. I’ve attached a sample of that (large) document that I’ve copied to a new page.
sample_double_footnote.odt (17.3 KB)
Appreciate if you could suggestion what is the best way to export a file from MS Word, so that it can be opened in my Libreoffice Wrtier without such glitches?
The sample is an ODT. It opens with three footnotes, and each of those has, after its marker (a small number 1,2,3) a number in the text of the footnote (8,9,10).
This sample also opens with these 1,2,3 and 8,9,10 in MS Word. It is already imported sample, that does not allow to see why the problem appeared in the original document, only how it looks. It’s like trying to reconstruct history judging by a later photo.
If possible, attach a sample that exhibit exactly the behavior that you describe: that it opens OK in Word, but with the double numbers in Writer.
Sorry if I am being vague. The ample_double_footnote.odt is taken from the MyLargeFile.doc which I opened with libreoffice writer.
If I open the very same MyLargeFile.doc using MS word, the double footnotes do not appear in original nor in the sample.
I would hazard a guess that the footnotes have been pasted separately, from another document or part of the same document in Word which has converted the footnote numbering to text. The footnote links have then been created and the footnote number no longer matches the pasted number in the pasted footnotes.
I have tried in Word 2010 and it is possible, by simply selecting a footnote and then pasting it in a different position as a new footnote, to get an extra footnote number before the text each time. To me, it looks like user error in Word.
Writer handles pasting of footnotes better by not pasting the previous footnote number so you don’t get those long strings of numbers.
Exactly. And if you want any help, you need to provide “MyLargeFile.doc”, or another DOC that shows the problem in Writer, but not in Word.
